Observing the Game in Action

Keeping a close eye on all the cards as well as the size of the pot is a very important part of playing poker and takes a conscious effort to do. The goal when observing the cards is to determine the odds that the card or cards that you need will come up as well as the likelihood that the cards needed by other players have either come up already or will come up. Plainly this is more important in some games than others, for example it is considerably more important in stud poker where there are no community cards and a number of each player’s cards are visible on the board. You also have to keep track of those cards that have already been removed from play by way of players folding.

A lot of this tracking and calculating is not necessary when playing online poker because most online poker rooms provide tools that do it all for you. While this can certainly be helpful and makes it much easier for people playing online it also means that their playing skills will probably not transfer from an online poker room to a live game very well simply because the player will not have developed the skills needed to make useful calculation without the help of the computer. If you ever intend to play in live games, it is probably worth the effort to start building up your observational skills long before you ever sit down at a live table regardless of how well you may fair online.

Observing the Other Players

Memorize that in poker you are playing against the other players at the table as opposed to the house, so the more information, patterns, and habits you can detect by observing the other players the better the likelihood that you will be able to use this information to your advantage in the game. An experienced observer should be able to detect what style of player they are up against, meaning whether they are cautious and conservative (tight) or wild and risky (loose), as well as their basic skill levels. Understanding this information about the other players gives you a good idea of how they will likely respond to any given move allowing you to manipulate them into making mistakes you can benefit from.

Your ability to observe the other players is significantly curtailed when playing poker online since you cannot actually see the people directly. This means there is virtually no chance of identifying “tells” or physical clues about what the other players are doing. Nevertheless, you can still determine their style of play and their skill level easily enough. Many online poker rooms have installed featured which track a lot of this information for you and provide it in a statistical format, however you should keep in mind that this information can be faked so you should rely more on the play you actually observe than on the statistical information provided

Blackjack Splitting Strategy

When a player’s first two dealt cards are of equal rank then he is entitled to immediately make a special move, which is known as ‘split’. As the name suggests the player can split his hand into two hands and take one more card in each hand. He then plays each of his two hands in turn in the normal way. In order to split the player has to place a wager equal to the wager already placed. Then the wins or losses of each hand are considered independently as if two diverse players are playing the two hands.

Now because a player can split that does not mean that he should split. There are occasions when he must never split, there are occasions when he must always split and there are occasions when his splitting or not depends on the dealer’s face up card. If the player holds two like ranked 10 value cards then he must not split. A hand value of 20 is near perfect. By splitting the player may get a blackjack or even two but the chances of this are remote. In some blackjack variants the rules allow splitting 10 value cards of different ranks, like a king and a ten. Usually this is not allowed because a king and a ten are of different ranks. Do not get fooled by such rules. The same logic applies. A hand value of 20 is the same whether made up of two queens or a king and a jack.

Never split two fives. Two fives give a hand value of 10. The theory says that the most probable card dealt will have a value of 10. Hence if a players hits with two fives then he has a good chance of reaching a hand value of 20. He may get a blackjack with a hit, which is even better. Even if he is next dealt a nine or an eight he will be in a comfortable position with a hand value of 19 or 18. If a player splits fives he is likely to get caught in no man’s land with hand values of about 15 in both hands. The same argument applies to a lesser degree to two fours. The simple strategy is not to split fours.

A player must always split aces. Two aces give a hand value of either 12 or 2. In both cases if players hit then they will go bust more often than not. If they split, however they stand a reasonable chance of getting a blackjack and a more than reasonable chance of ending up with a valid hand value of over 18. Similarly two nine and two eights must be split by players using the simple strategy.

For pairs of twos, threes, sixes and sevens the decision to split or not depends on the dealer’s face up card. If the dealer’s face up card is an eight, nine, ace or a 10 value card then the player should not split. In these cases the dealer is in a position of strength and is likely to reach a hand value of over 18. There is no point in risking an additional wager in this case. However if the dealer’s face up card is a seven or less then the dealer is in a weak position as he is more likely to go bust. Therefore players should exploit the situation by playing two hands.

The above strategies are based on simple analysis. Advanced strategies have been developed by using computer simulation and are presented as blackjack strategy cards. Players having access to these strategy cards should follow the strategies indicated therein. These strategies are only a little bit different from the simple strategies.

Blackjack Surrender Strategy

A few online blackjack variants allow the player to make a move that is known as “surrender”. This move functions in the following way. The player is dealt his two cards and the dealer is dealt one card face up and the other card face down. If the face up card is an ace then the dealer checks for blackjack. If the dealer has a blackjack the hand is over the player loses his entire wager. If the dealer does not have a blackjack then the player has the option to surrender. The player can, without making any other move, surrender and forfeit half his wager. In blackjack variants where dealer does not check for blackjack or does not receive his second card upfront the player can surrender as soon as he is dealt his cards and the dealer is dealt his face up card.

Here are three main factors that decide whether or not a player should surrender. As in other blackjack moves these factors are the player’s hand value, the dealer’s face up card and whether the dealer hits or stands on a hand value of soft 17. In this lesson each of the above factors will be taken up one at a time and the choice whether to surrender or not will be discussed.

Dealer stands on soft 17

Beneath this rule the only time a player should surrender is when he has a hard hand value of 15 or 16, subject to the dealer’s face up card. A hard hand value implies that there is no ace in the two cards dealt. So a hand value of hard 15 can be achieved by the player having 10 and 5, 9 and 6 or 8 and 7. In such a case the player should surrender only when the dealer’s face up card is 10.

A hand value of hard 16 can be achieved by the player having 10 and 6, 9 and 7 or 8 and 8. If the player has a pair of 8s then he should split his hand irrespective of the dealer’s face up card. In the other two cases the player should surrender only when the dealer’s face up card is 9, 10 or ace.

balck jack strategy

Dealer hits on soft 17

Once the dealer hits on a total of soft 17 he has an advantage because there is a likelihood of his ending up with a valid total greater than 17. Therefore the player is forced to go on the defensive and surrender more often. Again players should surrender only when they have hard totals.

While the player has a hand value of hard 15 he should surrender only when the dealer has 10 or ace as his face up card. When the player has a hand value of hard 16, except when he has a pair of 8s, he should surrender only when the dealer’s face up card is 9, 10 or ace. However he should surrender even with a pair of 8s if the dealer’s face up card is an ace. When the player has a hand value of hard 17 he should surrender only when the dealer’s face up card is an ace.

Here is a mathematical basis to the above described strategy for surrendering in blackjack. When the player’s expected chance of winning is less than 50% it is better that the player forfeits half his wager and thus salvages the other half.

Draw Poker

To begin, two players at the table make a small bet, or blind wager, before receiving any cards. Each player seated in the game takes a turn at placing such a wager.

Players first receive five cards dealt face down. Players pick up the cards and look at them and then decide if they wish to stay in the game. If so, a bet must now be placed.

Once all bets are called the first round of betting is complete.

Players may now choose to exchange with the dealer any number of cards from their hand. This is known as ‘the draw’.

Once the draw is complete a second round of betting takes place.

If all bets are called there is a showdown.

The winner is the player with the highest ranking hand.

If only one player remains (no showdown) they will win the pot without having to expose their cards.

Blackjack Variations

The majority casino games have variations and blackjack has more variations than others. Europeans have different rules from Americans and even in America Vegas rules differ from those in Atlantic City. In land-based casinos the basic structure of the game remains largely unchanged. The variations are in the number of decks used, or when a player is allowed to double or split or whether the dealer has to hit on a soft 17. Still in online casinos the rules often alter the basic structure of the game and offer many more variations, because it is innovativeness and variety that propels online casinos.

Mainly of the usual land casino blackjack games are offered on online casinos. But in the last five years or so a number of variations have been introduced. Many of the variations involve extra payouts such as for suited blackjacks or five card hands that do not bust. Microgaming online casinos offer some unique variations of blackjack in its Gold Series. These games offer progressive jackpots and motivating side bets. Microgaming Triple Sevens offers a progressive jackpot. A compulsory bet contributes to the jackpot. If the player is dealt three consecutive seven of diamonds then the progressive jackpot is hit. Microgaming Bonus Blackjack Gold has an optional side bet that offers additional payouts on the first two cards dealt to the player. The Jack and Ace of spades pays 50:1; any other suited Jack and Ace pays 25:1 and any two suited cards pay 5:2. Playtech offers one of the most innovative variations in blackjack in its game Blackjack Switch. The player has to play two hands with identical wagers. After the two cards are dealt for each hand the player has the option of switching the second cards. This offers so great an advantage to the players that a blackjack pays only even money in this game.

It is in the interest of the players that they are conscious of the blackjack variants offered and fully understand the rules valid for each variation of the game. If they do not do so they may end up making moves that are not allowed. Or even worse they may not consider moves that are allowed and give them an advantage. The best places to check out the games rules are review sites. Players can get all the games provided by all software developers under one roof. The best such site is Casino Advisor. Casino Advisor has reviewed a large number of online casino games, including blackjack games. The reviews can be easily located from the Casino Games menu in the lobby of the site. The games can be filtered according to type and software provider. The rules are clearly explained. In case Casino Advisor has not reviewed the variant do mail them and they will do the needful. Meanwhile the player can check out the rules from the Help menu of the game.
